Join RiversEdge West for a volunteer event at the Dos Rios Island on August 15, 2024 from 8 am - 10 am.
At this event we will primarily be installing caging around native plants to protect them from beavers and other wildlife. Other tasks may include invasive plant removal, trash cleanup, and installing fencing. Please note that the exact meeting location, timing, and tasks may change depending on river levels and temperature to ensure safety.
Light snacks and coffee will be provided. Work will all be outside, so please bring water, proper work attire (we recommend pants, close-toed shoes, and long sleeves), and sun protection. Specialized tools and work gloves will be provided, but you may also bring your own (no chainsaws).
All ages are welcome, but all participants under 18 must be supervised by a parent or guardian. This event is limited to the first 20 participants. Registration is required.
If you would like additional information, please email Nicole at ncook@riversedgewest.org.
About the City of Grand Junction's partnership with REW.
The City of Grand Junction is built around the Colorado and Gunnison Rivers, which are central to the city's economy, identity, and recreational opportunities. As the city continues to transition the riverfront from an industrial hub to a community-based landscape, parks, restored areas, and restaurants have become more common; inviting people to interact with the rivers. The most recent addition to the riverfront in Grand Junction is the River Park at Las Colonias Park, which serves as a "lazy-river" for the community. The park has been received extremely well, and it is constantly being used. However, noxious weeds and invasive tamarisk are encroaching on the park, which reduces the ecological integrity of the area for native plants, birds, and fish; and hinders the visibility and access to the river in some areas. The City also manages the island directly across from the new Dos Rios development where RiversEdge West plans to find its permanent home at the Confluence Center.
RiversEdge West is partnering with the City of Grand Junction and volunteers to actively improve these riverside areas. We hope that citizens and volunteers will gain a sense of stewardship and responsibility for the river and learn new skills!
