Qualified Charitable Distributions

Make a Tax-Wise Gift from your IRA

If you are a donor 70.5 years young or above, you can make a gift directly from your traditional IRA to RiversEdge West through a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) - also known as an IRA Charitable Rollover.

These gifts are a smart way to reduce your taxable income and, if you're 73 or older, they can also satisfy part or all of your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)—the annual withdrawal the IRS requires you to take from your IRA.

Unlike regular IRA withdrawals, QCDs are not taxed, making them a powerful tool for giving and saving on taxes.

Benefits of a QCD:

  • You can give up to $100,000 per year directly from your IRA to a qualified nonprofit like RiversEdge West.
  • The amount donated is excluded from your taxable income, which may help reduce your overall tax burden.
  • QCDs can satisfy all or part of your Required Minimum Distribution.

Other Details:

  • To qualify, your gift must be made directly from your IRA custodian to RiversEdge West.
  • Each financial institution has its own process, so check with your provider to get started.
  • QCDs are only available from traditional IRAs, not Roth IRAs or 401(k)s.

Give Strategically with a Donor Advised Fund

A Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) is a simple, flexible, and tax-smart way to support RiversEdge West and other causes you care about.

You can think of a DAF as a charitable investment account:

  • You contribute cash, stock, or other assets to the fund and receive an immediate tax deduction.
  • Your contribution can be invested and grow tax-free.
  • Over time, you recommend grants from your fund to nonprofits like RiversEdge West.

Many donors use DAFs to “bundle” or front-load their charitable giving, allowing them to itemize deductions in a high-income year, then take the standard deduction in future years—maximizing both impact and tax benefits.

You can easily recommend a grant to RiversEdge West from your DAF through your fund provider. To learn more about how a DAF might work for you, talk with your financial advisor or reach out to us with questions.
