Site Visit at the Pueblo of Santa Ana
Led by Nathan Schroeder, Restoration Division Manager for Santa Ana Pueblo
The Pueblo of Santa Ana has been actively engaged in riparian restoration since 1996. Work has been focused on restoring the river channel, active floodplain, and the historic floodplain on the Rio Grande, six miles of which are within the Pueblo’s borders. The tour will begin at the Hyatt Tamaya Spa and Resort and discuss the first project undertaken at the Pueblo. From there, we will walk down to the Rio Grande and discuss in-stream work,. tour past and current project work including willow swales, seeding and planting, and grassland reconstruction; future challenges including shrub invasion and overstory die-off will also be discussed. The Pueblo’s tours are generally informal with much of the discussion occurring between the points of interest. All sites are accessible by foot and most will be along established trails.
